EALD (English as an Additional Language or Dialect)
Our EAL/D program supports children who have English as an Additional Language or Dialect to learn English and be able to successfully access and engage with the curriculum.
All classroom teachers play a vital role in the EAL/D program. The EAL/D teacher is a resource person who can assist the classroom teacher. Both teachers are involved in co-planning to meet the specific needs of students.
The EAL/D teacher maintains contact with parents to assist them in understanding the learning process and class program arrangements.
The Directorate's EAL/D policy is available here: English as an Additional Language or Dialect (237 KB)
Music Program
At Giralang Primary School, we offer 2 instrumental group opportunities as part of the ACT Education Directorate's Instrumental Music Program (IMP): Year 5 and year 6 band brass.
We also offer lunchtime clubs with music options throughout the school week.
Christian Education in Schools
The ACT Education Act 2004 makes provision for the teaching of Religious Education in government primary schools, when requested by parents. Christian Religious Education (CRE) has been requested at our school and we currently have 'Supa Club' sessions taking place as a lunchtime club. CRE helps students to explore the Bible, beliefs, festivals and values of Christianity, with relevant and interactive activities presented by endorsed volunteers from local churches.
Should you wish your child to attend the CRE sessions please contact your child's teacher or make your wishes known at the front office. Further information can also be obtained by contacting the CRE Coordinator on 62305155.
Music Tuition for Guitar or Piano
Private tuition for Piano and Guitar is available to students during school time. Lessons are on a rotational basis so that children do not miss out on the same school lesson each week.
Excursions
Throughout the year the school organises excursions to complement and enrich units of study and classroom programs.
Teachers provide details of planned excursions in written form to parents / carers. We require written permission from parents / carers for your child to be able to attend any excursion. The school assists parents who are unable to meet the full costs of an excursion. Requests can be made to the Principal for support either personally or in writing.
Peer Tutoring / Cross-age tutoring
Students are trained to support others with their learning across Key Learning Areas. This may involve a year three student listening to a year one student read, a group of senior students setting up gross motor activities or assisting with an area of expertise with a peer.
The Arts
The Creative Art programs at Giralang Primary School engage students in learning experiences concerning the visual arts, music, drama and dance as part of their natural growth and development. Studies in The Creative Arts provide opportunities for each student to:
- appreciate and participate in the Arts;
- investigate and manipulate materials in order to create, make and present multimodal artworks;
- communicate through The Arts
- participate in and contribute to the cultural life of their society
- become informed consumers of The Arts
Health and Physical Education
At Giralang we conduct broad and balanced physical activity programs designed to develop students' skills, knowledge and attitudes as well as an understanding of their personal health. We provide a safe learning environment, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to participate.
Giralang Primary is a Health Promoting School where students participate in a range of sporting activities and programs. Children in Kindergarten to year 2 devote 20 – 30 minutes a day to physical activity. In years 3 to 6, 180 minutes a week is spent on physical activity.
Students from kindergarten to year 2 experience a variety of Gross Motor activities. Activities within these sessions centre around play, aiming for enjoyment and participation.
Students from years 3-6 participate in a balanced physical education and health program. These sessions assist in skill development for participation in modified sports as well as participation in fitness activities.
Programs include:
- Inter-school sport
- Dance
- Coaching clinics conducted by Sport Development Officers
- School Carnivals - Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics
- Sun Smart
Library and Resource Centre
- Our Library and Information Resource Centre is the hub of the school. Students from Kindergarten to year 6 are encouraged and provided with opportunities to develop skills to use the library for their learning, accessing information and pleasure.
- All children have a library lesson each week. Teachers work collaboratively to plan, implement and evaluate special units of study which incorporate Information Literacy Skills.
- The library is also used for a variety of activities throughout the week - small group work, meetings, games.
- Lost or damaged book? If a book is lost or damaged please let your child's classroom teacher know. This will enable us to delete the book from the computer records and borrowing can continue. We ask for a replacement donation of $5 for a paperback book and $10 for a hardback book
